Your preschooler is feeling more independent and curious than ever, making it a perfect time to introduce her to some of the fundamentals of healthy cooking. Safety comes first, but remember that giving your child the freedom to express her creativity will add a little zest to any kitchen activity.

Mix it up
Creative combinations are the basis for some of the world's favorite meals. Why not look at a few cookbooks and put a new twist on an old classic like pasta salad? Give her a range of ingredients to pick from like cooked carrots or broccoli, shredded cheese, and different colors and shapes of pasta, inclding whole grain pasta. Then let her mix in whatever she likes.

Little Aprons
The proper attire is required for your little chef! You and your preschooler can fashion your own aprons and chefs' hats out of supplies found in your craft box. Try cutting out a 12" by 18" piece of paper and decorate with crayons, colored pencils, and stickers. Then glue or tape a yard of ribbon to the decorated rectangle, centering it before fastening.

Less or More
Use a variety of see-through containers, liquids, and foods to help your preschooler learn to identify which is more, and which is less. You can even have them help you measure out ingredients for recipes.

May I Take Your Order
Playing dress up is one of your preschooler's favorite pastimes. But has she ever pretended to be a waitress? Start by giving her a pad and crayon and having her pretend to take your order. Then show her how to fold a napkin and set the table. Waitresses always get tips for good service, so make sure she gets a small reward for all her hard work.

Name and Taste
Identifying different fruits and vegetables helps your child build her vocabulary while teaching her about the value of a healthy diet. You can do this activity in the supermarket or at home: hold up a fresh, frozen, or canned fruit or vegetable and ask her to 'Name It.' The game's not over till you put that fruit or veggie to work in a meal!

Keep It Clean
Cooperation and cleanliness make kitchen time a lot more fun. You can demonstrate this to your child as you cook and eat together:
• Set an example by washing your hands before touching or eating food
• Rinse fresh fruits and veggies in cool water and have her pat them dry
• Help her sort the plates and bowls before they go into the dishwasher
